DC Comics Upcoming Movies & Marvel Comic Movies Coming Soon

Updated on December 24, 2021
Source

2011 had some great and not-so-great comic book movies from Marvel and DC Comics with the likes of Thor, Captain America and Green Lantern. So what do comic book fans of the have in store for them this year and in the future?

Believe it, DC Comics upcoming movies and the Marvel Comic movies coming soon in 2012 are highly anticipated releases. It's gonna be better than last year.

So let's start off with the confirmed releases that DC Comics and Marvel Comics have planned for us fans.

DC Comics Upcoming Movies 2012

2012's DC Comics upcoming movies really only has one in the spotlight, but it's a major one that has high expectations.

THE DARK KNIGHT RISES

July 20, 2012 is the official release date for the last installment of Christopher Nolan's Batman series starring Christian Bale as the Dark Knight. This movie is highly anticipated and has a lot of expectations. How will this rebooted series end, and will it stack up to the previous movies, especially The Dark Knight? No one can deny The Dark Knight was a major success and is the 10th highest grossing film of all time.

Even more of a concern is the addition of Catwoman. DC Comics have yet to get Catwoman right on the silver screen. Though her character is beloved in the comics, I must admit adding her to the mix is a risk, considering the character's past disappointments on the silver screen.

Despite the nervousness of fans, Christopher Nolan hasn't disappointed us yet. I think this movie will deliver, and get ready for the cosplay fans dressing up during opening weekend.

SUPERMAN: MAN OF STEEL 2013

It seems DC Comics upcoming movies for 2013 only has one that's been confirmed, and that's the rebooted Superman: Man of Steel movie. It's scheduled release date is set for summer June 14, 2013, and has new actor Henry Cavill filling the big boots of Supes.

DC & Warner seem to be jumping on the "darker and grittier" motif that Christopher Nolan has done with the Batman reboots, and we'll see a darker more edgier Superman in theaters in 2013. I remember talking to Greg Rucka at one Wondercon, saying Superman was too one dimensional and needed to get bit edgier for the movies. His reply, "That's just not the character (Superman)."

Well, that may be true. It may not be how the "character" is, but it seems Hollywood and DC Comics agrees that Supes needs to go that way as well. Will all DC Comics movies have a dark tone like Nolan's Batman trilogy? I sure hope not.

With Green Lantern churning out a so-so reception at the box office and major rants of disappointment from fans, will this "darker and grittier" Superman reboot deliver? After all, Green Lantern was not a dark and gritty movie, and it was pretty much a failure.

It seems that DC has trouble translating their characters to the silver screen, unlike Marvel who are putting out quality, entertaining films every year. So far it seems the only successful movie character DC & Warner have now is Batman.

However, Superman: The Man of Steel will have General Zod once again commanding all the evil, badness, and it will be great to see Superman go up against a villain who can actually take it and dish out it just as good, or, as comic fans are hoping, a lot more.

We will just have to wait and see, wont we?

RUMORED UPCOMING DC COMIC MOVIES FOR 2013

There are upcoming DC Comic movies that have the green light, but no confirmed movie release dates. They may come out in 2013, but I would push them back to at least 2014.

GREEN LANTERN 2

It seems DC & Warner have not given up on the Green Lantern movie franchise, and the first one was just a stepping stone to build up the cosmic emerald "Space Cop." I think the sequel will be a lot better than the first.

The sequel will have the anticipated duel between Green Lantern and his arch nemesis Sinestro! That's a battle comic fans are dying to see on the silver screen, and I think it'll be worth seeing. However, whether this comes out in 2013 or 2014 is still up in the air. I'm leaning more towards 2014, but the rumor is 2013.

THE FLASH

It seems the scarlet speedster finally has a script according to those at DC Comics & Warner Bros., and rumors of this speeding towards production has been around since 2010. Yikes! It seems DC & Warner have had trouble getting their beloved Superheroes to the silver screen.

Considering they haven't even confirmed a director yet or even the cast, the Flash movie may forever be a rumor. DC needs to get on the ball. A lot of fans are anticipating a Flash movie. Fans want it, but they don't want a Flash movie like 2011's Green Lantern.

Marvel Comic Movies Coming Soon 2012

As usual, Marvel has quite a few movies ready to hit the big screen in 2012, and two of them are highly anticipated. Unlike DC, Marvel will hit two major blockbusters this year to DC's one. However, Marvel does start off this year pretty weak when it comes to comic book movies.

GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE

Coming to a theater near you Feb 17, 2012...this movie is the year's...uhmmm...how can I put this..."Don't really care to see it," when it comes to the anticipation level for most comic fans.

I will be Netflixing this one when it comes out on DVD.

THE AVENGERS

It's going to be a box office rivalry between this highly anticipated movie and The Dark Knight Rises. So when is The Avengers movie coming out? It's coming out on May 4rth of this year and is the first cross-over comic book related flick and will no doubt make history.

This is the most anticipated Marvel movie coming soon and has been so since the first Iron Man movie and Incredible Hulk movie came out with their cross over ending scenes. It appears The Avengers movie villain will be Loki. At least, he will be the main Avengers movie villain.

This movie is expected to break box office records, and sets new ground in the world of comic book movies. Will this movie spark more cross over comic flicks for future Marvel movies? Perhaps, and I think that will be exciting to see. Will DC get on the ball and finally do a Justice League of America movie? Who knows? We can only hope so.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN

Curiosity alone on this reboot will make this Marvel's second blockbuster of 2012. Coming out the 4rth of July weekend, comic fans are anticipating a more emo and darker Spider-Man reboot that seems to be basing it's plot lines and characters more from the Ultimate Spider-Man comic series.

With new actor Andrew Garfield filling in Spidey's boots, there's a lot of mixed feelings about this reboot within the comic book fandom. I think this reboot will deliver, and The Lizard finally gets his spotlight and due as a Spidey movie villain, played by Rhys Ifans, the dude from The Replacements and Nottinghill.

Like the Avengers, I can't wait to see this movie, and I think Andrew Garfield will do an amazing job and surprise a lot of people and comic book fans.

MARVEL COMIC MOVIES COMING SOON 2013

It's going to be another big year for Marvel in 2013, and two Marvel flicks have been confirmed for a 2013 release date. Let's look at what's in store for Marvel movies 2013, as well as rumors beyond that year.

IRON MAN 3

Riding off high from The Avengers movie, Iron Man 3 has been confirmed to hit the screen in 2013. So far the Iron Man movie franchise has delivered, but the third will not be directed by Jon Favreau. Gulp!

Although, I'm looking forward to Iron Man 3, I think Favreau did an amazing job, and I'm not down with messing up the chemistry of things. But who really knows the real reason Favreau bowed out, and does the real reason really matter? Naw, not really. What matters is if Iron Man 3 delivers.

I must admit, Iron Man 2, though entertaining, was a disappointment compared to the first Iron Man movie. I hope future Marvel movies like Iron Man 3 do not have lame, second-tier villains like Whiplash. I'm expecting the iron Man 3 villains to be more central to Iron Man in the story.

Iron Man should've went with the greats like the Crimson Dynamo or Titanium Man.

Iron Man flies again on May 3rd 2013.

UPDATE: Iron Man 3 villains revealed! Click the link to find out just who are the Iron Man 3 villains in next years anticipated movie. I'm quite worried about all but one villain in Iron Man 3.

THOR 2

Marvel movies 2013 will see the sequel to The Thunder God. The Thor sequel will get a new director, and the first movie was not bad by all means. I actually scratched my head about a Thor movie, but I think they did a great job with the character.

We shall see July 26, 2013, which is the release date Marvel and Disney have confirmed so far. I truly hope they centralize the story more in Asgard this time. It's a great realm that we didn't get to see enough of in the first Thor. I hope they plan on doing this for future Marvel movies involving Thor.

FUTURE MARVEL COMIC MOVIES COMING SOON 2013 RUMORS

Here are the movies that have not been confirmed but rumors have been floating around to their possible release dates in 2013.

THE WOLVERINE

This movie was supposed to be set for a 2012 release, but due to whatever circumstances, it got pushed to a possible 2013 release date. However, those at Disney and Marvel have not yet confirmed it.

DOCTOR STRANGE

Marvel and Disney want to broaden the Marvel Universe in movies, and a rumored Doctor Strange film has been in the mill, with Patrick Dempsey expressing a desire to play the role. However, who knows if this movie will come to fruition, as Doctor Strange isn't really a popular comic book character.

Marvel has also announced it's plans for these movies to go into production soon:

  1. The Antman
  2. Guardians of the Galaxy
  3. The Inhumans
