Top Silver Age Comic Book Investment Guide! DC Comic books To Get In 2012!
75
Yes, I know! I've been giving a lot of love to Marvel when it comes to the best silver age comic book investment picks for 2012. So this time around I'm going to focus on some DC silver age comics that you should be on the look out for if you're serious about comic investing, or if you just love collecting silver age comic books.
This is just a partial list now. It would take me pages to write out all the great comic investment picks, so I'll just focus on my top picks for 2012. I'll be sure to write more articles about the subject so don't worry.
Sound good? Alright then. Get your spears, nets, and bows and arrows because here they are...the silver age DC comics to be on the hunt for and why.
Showcase #22 (1959) 1st Appearance of Silver Age Green Lantern
This comic boasts the 1st appearance and origin of Hal Jordan, who is known as Green Lantern to most of the world's population, but to comic geeks, he is actually the silver age Green Lantern. Yes, there was a Green Lantern before him - Alan Scott. Alan Scott is Hal Jordan's predecessor, and is referred to as the Golden Age Green Lantern.
Anyways, I'm getting a bit off topic here. This issue is not a cheap comic investment, and it's in demand right now, so current guide prices are behind. I'll list them anyways:
- Low NM: $16,000
- Very Fine: $5,600
- FINE: $1,900
- VERY GOOD: $1,266
- GOOD: $633
It's easy why this comic book is a great investment. The first Green Lantern movie already set the gears of demand rolling for this comic book, and the price will only go up since a Green Lantern sequel already has the green light.
If you can afford it...great! If not...no worries...there are other Green Lantern books from the silver age worth getting that may fit your budget.
Green Lantern #1 (1960) 1st Issue of 2nd Series
Since we're on a Green Lantern, it would be just plain wrong not to include the very 1st issue to the Green Lantern series starring Hal Jordan, right? Of course, it would be. So, here's this silver age comic that's in high demand now and going well over current guide values. Here's the values and, yes, this comic, even at guide, is still pricey:
- Low NM: $12,500
- Very Fine: $4,000
- FINE: $1,3500
- Very Good: $900
- Good: $450
Will this comic book continue to go up? Yes, but it would've been best to have grabbed this book before the first Green Lantern movie hit theaters. Now, it's just going to rise even more in value in the next few years.
Green Lantern #2 (1960) 2nd Issue of the Series
I'm putting the 2nd issue, because having issue #1 and it's follow up only adds value to your collection as an investment. Besides, it's a key issue - first appearance of Pie Face, but it's not a really important key. So here's the values on these, and I'm sure you can get this comic at or near guide price:
- Low NM: $$2,200
- Very Fine: $723
- FINE: $255
- Very Good: $170
- Good: $85
Still affordable as a long term comic book investment at FINE and Very Good.
Green Lantern #7 (1960) 1st Sinestro Appearance
This comic's demand and value has been extremely hot, especially with comic book fans anticipating the big showdown between Hal Jordan and Sinestro in the Green Lantern 2 sequel. Guide really doesn't reflect the price anymore, and they need to increase when the new Overstreet comes with the 2012-2013 version this year.
- Low NM: $1,200
- Very Fine: $392
- FINE: $144
- Very Good: $96
- Good: $48
The origin and 1st appearance of The Green Lantern's main arch enemy? I'd say this issue is very wise choice as a comic investment.

Adventure Comics #283 (1961) 1st Appearance of Zod
Okay, sorry, General Zod. Because the Superman reboot: The Man of Steel will actually have General Zod as a villain, much attention should be turned towards this book. This comic book also boast the introduction of The Phantom Zone. The demand for this book hasn't quite picked up yet, so it's still affordable to grab. I am quite surprised about that.
- Low NM: $375
- Very Fine: $165
- FINE: $84
- Very Good: $56
- Good: $37
Superman: Man of Steel is slated for a 2013 release so the longer you wait the more you'll have to pay for this comic. The quicker you get it, the more value you'll get from it as prices and demand increases dramatically as the movie release gets closer and closer.
In conclusion
These are just a few of my top picks of silver age comics to invest in 2012. Investing in comics is all about researching and finding out what's hot and what will be hot in the near future.
Demand is critical. Demand will determine how much you'll be paying currently, as well as how hard it will be to find a certain key issue.
Why didn't I put any Batman comics in here since the new and last installment of the Dark Knight movie franchise is coming out soon? Batman key issues that have to do with the movie are way, way out of reach for most collectors. Besides, the early Batman key issues, such as Batman #1, are from the golden age of comics.
